Experience, Education, and Background


Professional Experience:

 

Chris Causey is an attorney, professional mediator, and conflict resolution specialist in Portland, Maine.  Chris has conducted over 1000 mediations, including divorce  & family matters, commercial disputes, probate-related matters, personal injury claims and those disputes involving real estate and intellectual property. He works with attorneys representing clients in litigation and with unrepresented parties who seek a safe, private and effective alternative to litigation.  He is a rostered EEOC mediator and also rostered in the Maine Superior Court and District Court systems.

 

Outside his work as an attorney and mediator, Chris teaches conflict resolution skills to attorneys, phyisicians, mediators and other professionals throughout New England. He is also available to facilitate boards of directors meetings, public policy matters and multi-participant consensus building dialogues.   

 

Background and Education: 

 

Chris received his formal dispute resolution training from the Harvard University Law School Program on Negotiation.  He earned his law degree from Lewis & Clark Law School of Portland, Oregon, where he was a member of the Cornelius Honor Society and the Class of 2000 Recipient of the Joyce Ann Harpole Legacy Award for Scholarship.  He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Colgate University.  In between undergraduate studies and law school, Chris worked for several years as a commercial fisherman in Kodiak, Alaska. 

 

In addition to being a mediator, Chris is an attorney licensed to practice law in Maine and Alaska. He has practiced law with the firms of Kelly Remmel & Zimmerman and Birch Horton Bittner & Cherot.  His practice has included representing plaintiffs and defendants in personal injury and commercial lawsuits filed in state and federal courts and trying cases before juries. Chris also served two years as a federal judicial law clerk for the Honorable H. Russel Holland of the United States District Court for the District of Alaska.  

 

Professional Leadership in Maine and New England:

 

Chris currently serves on the Board of Directors for the New England Association for Conflict Resolution and the Board of Governors for the Maine Association of Mediators.  He is also the Volunteer Director of Mediation for the Maine Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.  He teaches mediation and dispute resolution skills at various locations in Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts and he routinely provides pro bono mediation services for Youth Alternatives Ingraham and The Volunteers of America.
